Chapter Abstract:

Chapter 9 delves into the system design examples of peripheral nerve implants and neurostimulators. The chapter commences with an introduction, progressing into the intricacies of wireless powering and telemetry tailored for peripheral nerve implants. Detailed insights are provided on peripheral nerve prostheses, encompassing stimulator implants, neural recording, and the necessities for wireless power delivery and telemetry. The chapter showcases the design of a wireless platform for both stimulator and recording implants, substantiated with comprehensive design experiments, emphasizing power transfer characteristics in tissue settings and safety parameters, both bio and electrical. The merits of near‐field resonant inductive‐coupling are juxtaposed against near‐field capacitive‐coupling links. Additionally, the chapter presents innovative solutions for neurostimulators, focusing on the co‐matching solution for narrow‐band antennas and reconfigurable antenna designs. Practical aspects, including antenna manufacturing, system design, and optimized RF links, are discussed, culminating in a summarization of the chapter's core concepts.
