Abstract:
Due to climate concerns, the push towards transportation electrification to deliver electric machines capable of high-power density performance is becoming increasingly critical. A key component of this is the structure and manufacture of the windings as these are the dominant source of machine loss. As current solutions are high loss, expensive or time consuming to manufacture, to accommodate the increasing demands for electric machine solutions, across the operating requirements, manufacturable winding solutions are necessary. This paper provides a multi-physics review of stranded and edgewise conductor performance. Stranded and edgewise winding structures are then simulated on a base machine, considering the impact of slot structures on winding geometry. The contribution of the paper is the development of a highly manufacturable edgewise winding structure without significant performance loss.
