Abstract:

National power grid challenges has forced telecommunication companies to rely more on standby generators as a secondary power source for their remote sites. However, this came with challenges such as increased fuel budget, fuel theft, Fuel mismanagement and fraud during refueling of the generator tanks. Rapid fuel cost increases have resulted to a high number of fuel theft and fraud incidents in refueling process. This paper explores different methods of fuel monitoring methods, study their merits and their tradeoffs analytically, then choose a suitable one to implement a remote fuel level monitoring and management system using Internet of things (IoT). The current work investigates a variety of remote site monitoring methods available in the field. Analysis is performed and their comparison developed against cost, power consumption, stability, reliability, efficiency, user interface, and time (processing and speed) to pinpoint the advantages, and disadvantages of various methods encountered in literature in order to advise on a more suitable choice for our application. The finding results revealed that Arduino board was the best choice for the remote fuel monitoring application.
