Abstract:
This paper presents the hardware development of a high-performance liquid metal-based cooling system for an ultra-high power density three-phase inverter. For the first time, the permanent magnet (PM) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) liquid metal coolant pump is integrated into the converter’s dc bus, enabling self-adaptive cooling with fast transient response. The hardware demonstrates the cooling system’s ability to dissipate 246 W of losses at a flow rate of just 0.55 L/min, with an extremely low power consumption of less than 0.1 W. The liquid metal-cooled inverter prototype is able to achieve an ultra-high power density of 120 kVA/L at 20 kVA output power
