Abstract:

With the growing concern for human respiratory health, good air quality in the built environment and in vehicles is an issue which is quickly rising to the forefront of developments in the domain of ventilation and human comfort. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is often assessed based on the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, which is used as an indicator of pathogen dispersion. The study of human breathing is a common cornerstone in evaluating air quality for human comfort and health. However, several issues are found with the accurate reproduction of the breathing process in breathing thermal manikins. The present paper presents the most significant issues identified in the literature regarding artificial breathing simulators (ABS). Subsequently a design proposal is formed for an ABS system which more accurately describes the human breathing process.
