Chapter Abstract:

In this chapter, the discrete sector‐based rotor initial position estimation is introduced first. Furthermore, two improved estimation methods are described in detail with experiment results. In addition, it is necessary to determine the magnitude and duration of the pulse for injection in order to obtain a reliable estimation performance. Based on the magnetic saturation effect, rotor initial position can be easily detected by looking at the current responses by injecting several short voltage pulses. The majority of the short pulse injection‐based rotor initial position estimation methods rely on the magnetic saturation effect, which is illustrated in the chapter. Compared to HFSI methods, the short pulse‐based method is simple and fast with a satisfactory estimation accuracy since it only locates rotor initial position in one of the sectors instead of an exact continuous position without using complex algorithms and observers.
