Abstract:

This paper proposes a novel metasurface absorber to significantly reduce the specific absorption rate (SAR) of a mobile antenna used for next-generation 5G communication. The absorber’s unit cell consists of anchor-shaped metallic strips with four-fold symmetry, which essentially makes the structure polarization insensitive. The proposed absorber exhibits maximum absorption of 99.9% at 3.6 GHz. The absorption mechanism has been illustrated with electric and magnetic dipole resonance. Further, to demonstrate the capability of the absorber, it has been placed behind a mobile antenna. The performance of the absorber-loaded mobile antenna is studied in presence of ‘SAR Head Hand and phone’ model. The proposed metasurface absorber is able to reduce the SAR of the antenna by more than 75%.
