Abstract:

Project management simulation aims to provide experience in managing projects using a project management framework. Despite being the most widely used Agile framework, there has not been much development for a simulator that can simulate project management with Scrum. With the existing Simulator, the user cannot configure the simulated project and the simulator cannot automatically generate simulation events to simulate project risks, making it not suitable to be used by a single user. This paper discusses the development of a web-based Scrum project management simulator that can be used by a single user. The user can configure their projects by defining product backlog and sprint backlog. The Scrum ceremony simulated by the simulator includes sprint planning and sprint review. The simulator can generate simulation events that will affect simulation variables automatically with user-defined probabilities. The user needs to respond to the events by changing the value of simulation variables so that the project can be completed according to plan. AgileEVM is used in the simulator to assist users when responding to an event. The simulator was tested using functional testing and simulation testing. The functional testing shows that each feature can work as expected. The simulation testing shows that the simulation events and simulation responses affect simulation results. Therefore, the simulator reached its goal as it can be used to help users learn Scrum project management process.

I. Introduction

Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to deliver project needs and achieve project goals [1]. Project goals can be achieved if the project manager has the right knowledge and skills necessary for effective project management. Project managers can obtain that knowledge and skills by learning project management and its framework.
