Chapter Abstract:
Partial discharge (PD) measurements are widely performed both on the individual coils used in stator windings and on complete stator windings in conventional electrical rotating machines, which includes motors, generators, and synchronous condensers. This chapter presents the main insulation system features of form‐wound stator windings rated 3 kV and higher. There are many different insulation failure processes (aging mechanisms) that either produce PD as a symptom of insulation aging, or where PD is a direct cause of aging. These failure processes are identified and explained. The most common methods for factory testing, onsite/offline testing, and online PD monitoring are presented, as is the interpretation for each type of test. IEEE 1434 was the first published international standard for performing PD tests on coils and windings. A PD pulse within a stator winding must travel a complex path between the PD site and the PD sensor where the discharge pulse current is detected.
