Abstract:

Present U.S. regulations do not require the removal of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) from service in transformers and capacitors earlier than normal. Impending regulations may not permit their use in any industry regulated by the FDA or USDA. This prohibition will even include oil-filled transformers that may be PCB contaminated. This paper discusses EPA regulations, both current and proposed, and what the possible effects may be concerning keeping your present equipment in service. Other problems that are highlighted are those that result from accidental spills, and the disposal of equipment removed from service. Completing the discussion is an overview of alternatives to the PCB transformer.
