Abstract:

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capacity to monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions, to identify and label different emotions, to utilise emotional knowledge to guide cognition and behaviour, and to manage or alter emotions in response to situations or to accomplish one’s goals. Emotional intelligence involves both intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence. Emotions have the power to improve or worsen a student’s overall achievement, work ethic, drive, and academic engagement. This study intends to show that tutors are adequately informed about how essential emotional intelligence is to students’ academic achievement. A cross-sectional survey was conducted from March to April 2021 among 100 dental students through a self-administrated questionnaire through an online survey link (I.e.) google forms. The responses were collected and statistically analyzed. Chi-square test was used to analyze and compare the knowledge and awareness of a tutor on emotional intelligence and students’ academic performance. The confidence level was 95% and of statistical significance P¡ 0.05. The method of representation of data used here is bar charts. The majority of the tutors 80-90% were aware of emotional intelligence and how to deal with the students when their emotional intelligence is low. This study concluded that most of the tutors were aware of emotional intelligence and how emotional intelligence plays an important role in a student’s life, and when emotional intelligence is low how it affects their academic performances.
