Abstract:
For long transmission lines, synchronization becomes a challenge due to excessive capacitive MVAr produced by the line itself. This phenomenon is known as Ferranti effect. To reduce the Ferranti effect in EHV lines, line shunt reactors are typically applied at transmission lines ends. Optimum sized line shunt reactor helps reduce line losses and subsequently increases voltage profile and line loadability. Line length have major impact on reactor requirement ampersand its size. System strength in terms of high ampersand low short circuit level will have impact on system voltage profile during lightly ampersand heavily loaded conditions. This, in effect, will play a vital role in EHV Reactor Requirement. The system strength impact on the line shunt reactor requirements is investigated in this paper.
