Abstract:

The ladle furnace plays a very important role in the manufacturing of steel. A ladle furnace is used in the refining of liquid steel to obtain superior-grade steel. A ladle furnace is a disturbing load that affects the system's power quality and power factor. The harmonics created and the ladle furnace's low power factor are two issues that need to be addressed. The harmonic filter bank provided the best solution to take care of the harmonics and lagging power factor due to the ladle furnace. This paper includes a detailed case study of designing a harmonic filter bank for the improvement of power factor and harmonic mitigation of a real 350 ton/50 MVA ladle furnace in a steel plant.
