Abstract:
Ray tracing is the most powerful tool in photorealistic image production. Since Kajiya [1] provided a Monte Carlo solution on his proposed render equation in 1986, almost all the following ray tracers are recursive and Monte Carlo [2]. Despite the amazing result that can be generated through ray tracing, its recursive characteristic requires large computing resources and makes the process of rendering time-consuming. Based on all these above, this paper proposes a novel ray tracing approach based on a customized ray tracing pipeline in Unity with DirectX Raytracing (DXR) to produce lifelike results. Unlike the common ray tracers using procedural geometry, this paper takes advantages of Unity's scene view window to present the whole scene in a more visualized way rather than hard coded description of scene settings in the configuration. In addition, a mixture of sampling strategy is adopted in this research. This research conducts the experiment based on the classical Cornell-Box [3] scene in computer graphics and the results show that the ray tracing method with Unity and DXR increasingly improves the efficiency and the mixture sampling strategy enhances the quality of final result.
