A broadband wide-angle absorbing structure for the non-reflective termination of tissue is proposed for enclosures needed in microwave tissue imaging. A prototype consisting of 10 × 10 unit cells is fabricated and experimentally tested using breast-tissue phantoms. Through simulations and measurements, it is demonstrated that the proposed absorbing structure achieves a reflection coefficient bette...Show More
We propose a broadband wide-angle absorbing structure for the microwave imaging of tissue. At incidence angles from 0° to 80°, the reflection coefficient for the proposed structure is better than −20 dB for TE polarization and better than −12 dB for TM polarization within the operational bandwidth of 3 GHz to 8 GHz. The results indicate superior performance in comparison with published results. Th...Show More
This article introduces a new and generalized approach to designing stacked patch antennas with responses of any order using a generalized circuit model assisted with multiple lump ports. The proposed method incorporates frequency-dependent K-inverters to account for the frequency-dependent radiating characteristics of the radiators. The design process begins with a preliminary configuration devel...Show More
This article proposes a general circuit model for a thin wire antenna and a generalized approach to design an N th-order parallel coupled wire antenna with its companion circuit model. Frequency-variant K -inverters are involved in the new equivalent circuit to describe the frequency-variant radiation effect of the antenna. The design procedure starts with an initial prototype developed from...Show More
In this communication, a dual-band dual-polarized antenna with very small frequency spacing is proposed for base-station applications. The antenna includes one lower band (LB) and one upper band (UP) dual-polarized filtering dipole elements. The LB antenna is embedded in the UP antenna. Guided by the well-known coupling matrix model, each antenna design yields third-order filter responses with two...Show More
A wideband cup dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) with a monopole-like mode is presented. A new coil feeding structure is used, creating an equivalent magnetic current loop above the ground plane, exciting the CDRA $\textrm {TM}_{01 \delta } $ mode and an equivalent electric dipole at the adjacent frequency band. Thus, a broad bandwidth is achieved from two adjacent resonances. A CDRA with $0....Show More
In this paper, a dielectric substrate with high relative permittivity is used to miniaturize the patch antennas with double torsion coil feeding structure. The double torsion coil feeding structure is used to achieve wide bandwidth. The size of the linearly polarized patch antenna and the dual-polarized patch antenna is decreased by 50% and 61%, respectively, while maintaining good radiation and p...Show More
This letter proposes a dielectric superstrate to reduce the couplings between copolarized and cross-polarized antenna elements in realistic base station (BS) arrays. The mutual couplings are reduced by adjusting the permittivity and profile of the dielectric superstrate to create “reflected” waves to neutralize the original coupling wave. The dielectric superstrate is a simple structure that is ea...Show More
Staggered array antenna is a common array configuration for large-scale array antennas due to its favorable radiation characteristics and relatively large element spacing. In developing a compact staggered dipole array, the most challenging issue is how to simultaneously reduce the four mutual couplings taking place between adjacent co-polarized antenna elements with diversified phase laggings. A ...Show More
A new feeding structure for patch antennas is proposed in this paper. The feeding structure is formed by a double torsion coil (DTC) with one end electrically connected to the ground. The maximum stretch length of the coil is around half of the wavelength of the center frequency. The winding direction of the coil is reversed at the middle point of the coil. The DTC is able to produce two coaxial e...Show More
A new wideband ±45° dual-polarized metal loop dielectric resonator magnetoelectric antenna is proposed in this communication. The antenna consists of two orthogonal dielectric bars that support two orthogonal electric dipoles and two cross interlaced metal semi-loops that are equivalent to two orthogonal magnetic dipoles above the ground. With a legitimate combination of the electric and magnetic ...Show More
Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) technology is considered to be a key enabling technology for future wireless communication systems. One of the challenges in effectively implementing an advanced precoding scheme to a large-scale array antenna is how to reduce the mutual coupling among antenna elements. In this paper, a new concept that is called array-antenna decoupling surface (ADS...Show More
A novel circularly polarized table-like air patch (CP-TAP) antenna is proposed in this letter. With four inherently built-in grounded legs at four corners of the patch, the new antenna can be easily self-supported on the ground plane without any dielectric supporting structure. Two feeding structures of the CP-TAP antenna are proposed. A single-probe-fed prototype operating at 2.45 GHz demonstrate...Show More
A novel circularly polarized light-weight “boxing-ring” antenna is proposed in this paper. It consists of a rectangular metal annulus and four inherent metallic legs extending from the four corners to the ground, which provide a firm mechanic structure to support the top annulus. A prototype antenna operating at 2.45 GHz is designed and fabricated. A bandwidth of 7% for reflection coefficient of -...Show More
A novel, frequency-agile combined antenna is proposed and studied. The antenna is composed of a wideband, quasi-omnidirectional tapered slot antenna operated from 5.1 to 10.9 GHz and a narrowband, directional microstrip patch antenna centered at 5.765 GHz. The mutual coupling between the narrowband and wideband element is low, which element isolation is higher than 30 dB within the operating bandw...Show More
Design concept of a novel combined antenna for cognitive radio applications is proposed and numerically verified. The antenna is composed of a wideband circular monopole and a narrowband dipole. The impedance bandwidth of the wideband monopole antenna is from 4.25–10GHz. The narrowband dipole antenna's central frequency is 5.8GHz. The isolation between the two elements is higher than 50dB, which i...Show More
