Abstract:
Development of sustainable energy management solution is a promising research area with the energy crisis in the world. Many studies have been conducted to implement an electricity management solution which serves the load monitoring at consumer level. Accordingly, Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) provides affordable solution with one single smart meter for data acquisition than Intrusive load monitoring (ILM) which challenges the implementation because of the hardware installation. Therefore, NILM plays a salient role in energy management sector to implement a cost-efficient, optimize, scalable and reliable solution. However, conducted research works are incapable of applying to the real environment due to the practical issues. This review paper mainly focused on identifying the conducted literatures in electricity management with NILM approaches. Therefore, stages in the NILM framework are explained with the approaches used in the current literature. This paper compares the required conditions to implement a NILM solution in both residential and commercial building in terms of data acquisition and appliance level detection. Finally, open challenges are discussed to formulate future research directions.
