Abstract:

As the semiconductor industry experiences massive growth, the number of parties involved in the chip design and manufacturing process increases. This leads to untrusted entities having direct involvement in design and/or manufacturing of integrated circuits. These untrusted entities may insert hardware Trojans, which are malicious circuit elements that can leak secret information or cause improper function of the circuit. Hardware Trojan detection is not trivial since hardware Trojans are generally designed to remain quiet under normal operating conditions. Accordingly, hardware Trojan detection in the last decade or so become a topic of both academic and industrial research. This paper provides a primer on hardware Trojans including more recent developments in hardware Trojan designs and attack threats (hardware platform specific), as well as applicable detection techniques. There is an added emphasis on the recent advancements in machine learning for hardware Trojan detection.
