Abstract:

The design and fabrication of a novel engine air intake sensor is presented. The geometry of the sensor's housing was derived through appropriate CFD simulations while 3D printing technology was selected for its fabrication. The sensing element of the device is based on PCB technology which utilizes typical commercially available PT100 RTDs mounted directly on a PCB substrate, enabling effective thermal isolation and facile electrical interconnection to the corresponding circuitry. The device was integrated into a DIESEL engine testbed; its proper functionality was validated through electrical characterization employing Constant Current operation mode. Preliminary results are promising for an air intake range of 0 to 260 kg/h. Key features of the proposed device are low-cost, robustness and simplicity of fabrication suggesting numerous potential applications in the automotive area.
