Improving Healthcare Systems through Process Mining

Real processes are different from the ideal ones in an organisation. In order to uncover hidden problems and gain objective insights of real business processes, it is essential to get an accurate view of all activities involved in each process. This analysis is crucial to reduce cost and provide high quality care in the healthcare organisations. This paper demonstrates the application of process mining on a set of activities involved in the patients' treatment process in a cardiology hospital. We evaluated our system on the event logs generated on the basis of daily processes in the hospital and analysed the logs using process mining tool. The results show that the process flow model generated on the basis of event logs provides useful insight of the real processes by determining the cause of delay, inconsistencies, and bottlenecks in patients' care flow.
