Abstract:

With the fast-paced innovation in the area of information technology, the quality of life of people has greatly improved. However, people with disabilities, more precisely, visually impaired people have not benefited the same as compared to normal people. This paper aims at bringing latest technologies to the service of the visually impaired persons through the design, implementation and evaluation of a mobile assistive application, named Eye Guide that aims at supporting visually impaired people in their daily operations by making them benefit from latest advancements in mobile application development. The main features of the application include face recognition, optical character recognition, object recognition and voice output which will facilitate the life of these individuals. It also makes use of the talkback functionality which greatly simplifies the interaction between the visually impaired person and the application. Eye Guide can also be activated within shake of the device making it readily available when needed. Eye Guide has been tested in a Non-Governmental Organization based in Mauritius and has been appreciated by the users including the caregivers. We anticipate that the use of Eye Guide will be very beneficial for the visually impaired persons in Mauritius and may even be used for similar persons in the region of Africa.
