Abstract:

A metamaterial based microwave biosensor is presented for ISM band biomedical applications. Modeling and simulations are carried out in CST Microwave Studio. Initially a metamaterial resonator consisting of a microstrip meandered line with a middle gap and three separate microstrip lines is designed and optimized to operate at 2.45 GHz ISM band. In the first stage considering that there is air on the sensor surface, return / insertion loss curves are obtained, and then four different dielectric materials with four different permittivity; Taconic TLP-5 (εr = 2.2), Rogers RO4533 (εr = 3.4), Arlon AD450 (εr = 4.6), Preperm L570 (εr = 5.8) are applied respectively to the sensor surface. While there is a 1.2 change in the dielectric coefficient, a 100 MHz change is observed in the central resonance frequency at each step. This proved that this proposed structure can be used as a biosensor in detection studies of biomaterials such as cancer tissues and malignant cells whose permittivities has been determined by previous studies and is a good candidate for biomedical diagnosis.
