Abstract:
Power Distribution system in India continues to be the weakest link prone to high losses, aging infrastructures and poor reliability indices. "Smart grid" generally makes reference to a class of technology that enables Distribution Company (DISCOM) to use computer-based remote control and automation. This paper provides a detailed case study of smart community pilot project where the DISCOM faced challenges like high AT&C losses, increasing peak demand, aging distribution infrastructures and difficulties in identifying fault location during technical outages. A detailed feasibility study was proposed in 4 selected feeders which included smart grid technologies like smart meters, Head end system, SCADA, load breaking switch, meter data management system, Decision making support software, outage management system etc.
