Abstract:
The article proposes the design of a circular shaped patch antenna with a circular slot at its centre and a defected ground plane. The antenna operates in two distinct frequency bands, 2.3 GHz to 5.3 GHz and 7.2 GHz to 20 GHz and hence is suitable for applications in the S-band (2 GHz to 4 GHz), the X-band (8 GHz to 12 GHz) and the Ku-band (12 GHz to 20 GHz). The overall size of the antenna is 30mm∗30mm∗1.5mm which makes it suitable for applications in compact portable devices such as mobile phones, smart watches, bluetooth headsets, etc. Annealed copper is used as a conductor and the substrate is made up of FR4 which has an electrical permittivity of 4.3 and a loss tangent of 0.025. The simulated reflection coefficients, impedance curves and radiation patterns of the proposed antenna are described in detail in this paper.
