Abstract:

In this paper, a novel structure for nearly full (97%) tunable absorption of the optical wave is presented. The proposed structure consists a periodic array of core-shell nano-spheres. The boundaries of the unit cells are covered with electrically biased graphene. By modifying the geometrical parameters of the spheres and bias parameters of graphene, it is feasible to obtain nearly full tunable absorption in the optical frequencies. The array is mounted on a substrate with dielectric constant of 2.1 and an optically thick gold ground plane. The ground plane, not only improves absorption by complete cancelation of the transmitted wave but also provides a practical reference plane to bias the graphene layers. Also, due to the isotropy of the proposed unit cell, the performance is not sensitive to the incident angle.
