Abstract:
This research presents a case study focusing on the design and evaluation of a microgrid tailored for a residential community in Bogota, Colombia. The microgrid incorporates a communications architecture compliant with the IEC 61850 Standard, facilitating effective management of information within the system. The study evaluates the performance of the commu-nication network under normal operating conditions and a sim-ulated failure scenario. The proposed communications network considers the configuration and physical layout of control and protection (C&P) equipment. The architecture based on High-availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR) topology, incorporates three VLANs for data organization. Simulation using CISCO Packet Tracer assesses the performance of control, metering, and protection systems. Evaluation results demonstrate maximum transmission times within the control and protection systems, with a fault clearing time of 49 ms observed in the case study. The relative simplicity of the network architecture and its advantages underscore the feasibility of the proposed approach.
