Abstract:

The propagation of eigenwaves (surface plasmon-polaritons, SPPs) and their energy distribution in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are considered. Using a hydrodynamic model for the case of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs), we have constructed the conductivity tensor considering the losses in the system and got the wavenumbers of SPPs. The electromagnetic field distribution in the DWCNTs cells is found analytically. It is found that the energy of high-order modes is concentrated predominantly near the outer wall of the DWCNT, while the energy of the fundamental mode is localized near the inner wall. The results obtained can be used to design compact amplifiers and generators of coherent radiation based on MWCNTs.
