Summary
Compact heat exchangers are typically used for liquid‐gas heat transfer. They have undergone several developments in recent decades, with applications such as embedded equipment on aircraft, locomotives and space shuttles, where space available for equipment installation is one of the main design parameters. Finned‐tube heat exchangers constitute an important category of compact heat exchangers. They are very commonly used in industry, especially for liquid/gas exchanges. Plate‐fin heat exchangers can be used in parallel flow, counter‐flow or cross‐flow, but the cross‐flow and counter‐flow configurations are most commonly encountered in industry. Spiral heat exchangers are mainly used for heat transfer between two liquids. They are used secondarily in condensation and for gas cooling. As a result of their high compactness, high pressure resistance and high thermal efficiency, printed‐circuit heat exchangers have generated great interest in recent years in the field of nuclear, solar and power electronics cooling.
