Abstract:

Fossil fuels have been used as a source of electrical energy since the development and advancements of electrical grids, with AC always being the preferred form of power. As time progressed, DC was steadily advancing to catch up with AC with various developments of HVDC networks. The invention of DC microgrids gave new light to the future of DC power utilization. Various energy management systems have since been developed to optimize DC power. One of the systems of note is the Battery-supercapacitor Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS). Every system must be developed, modeled, and analyzed to have a technical grasp of how the system will operate under diverse loading and conditions if it is to be operated at its optimal level. This paper serves the purpose of a review on the subject matter and modeling that have undergone using MATLAB/Simulink software. Simulations are run for changes in loading and system conditions. Observation is then made on the system's components' response concerning system major parameters such as the voltage, current, power, and states of charge (SoC). After the results are obtained, they are analyzed, and conclusions and recommendations are made.
