Abstract:

The sensor reduction operation of a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) reduces the hardware complexity, saves initial cost and improves its applicability. In the paper, the estimation of arm current by a properly designed observer model for a 2N+1 modulation scheme is done. The proof for the model to be observable and stable is included. The individual capacitor voltages of submodules required for balancing of capacitor voltages are predicted by using the available arm voltage, arm insertion index and the switching status of submodule. The innovativeness of the paper lies in the requirement of only one voltage measurement from the MMC stack i.e. the arm voltage, being used in the observer model and the capacitor voltage prediction. The generalized nature of the observer model for any n-level MMC structure makes the execution of the observer model fast due to the simplicity of its model. A 21-level (N = 10) three phase MMC with a grid interface closed-loop simulation performance is provided for concept validation.
