Abstract:

Petroleum-based composites are multifunctional materials for automotive, construction and energy production. The utilization of petroleum-based substances increases the emission of greenhouse gas, CO2, and results in global warming. Biocomposites are developed for substituting nonrenewable energy resources. Electrospinning and twin-screw extrusion are two of the common manufacturing processes for synthesizing biocomposites. Both manual and automated operations are involved in the production. Potential risks have significant impact on the safety of workers and the workplace. Personal protective equipment, regular maintenance and risk assessments are proposed to minimize the potential hazards. The existing safety measures cooperate with smart safety management help to reduce laboratory accidents. In the near future, robotics can work alongside with the workers to minimize high risks operations in laboratories.
