Abstract:

Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs are quite advantageous compared to other types of commercial bulbs available in the market. In lighting and size, LEDs have prominent advantages such as long life, energy efficiency, low radiated heat, instantaneous illumination compared to other bulbs. This made LEDs start gaining the major portion of the market since past decade. However, the driver circuit is essential in LED for ac-dc conversion and maintaining unity power factor at supply end. The overall efficiency, performance and output power can be further improved in an LED if a dc supply is used instead of AC. Further, using dc supply reduces the cost of rectifier unit present in the driver circuit. In this regard, this work presents a new topology based on multi-input and multi-output dc-dc converter for different voltage and power ranges of LEDs. The presented converter has key features like lesser bill-of-materials, wider step-down voltage range, good cross regulation when compared to other type of converters. It provides dual input and dual output characteristics that can drive different types of LEDs. The study is then extended as a novel arrangement to obtain step-up and step-down voltage ranges that aid in employing the presented converter for wider voltage and power range applications. The proposed topology has been validated by performing simulations in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
