Abstract:

The sound myogram (SMG) detected at the biceps surface by a contact sensor and the EMG were studied during 4-s isometric contractions from 10% to 100% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) and exhausting isometric contractions at 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% MVC. The amplitude of SMG was estimated by the integration of the signal. Frequency-domain analysis was performed by MESE (maximum-entropy spectrum estimation) and FFT (fast Fourier transform) methods. The cross-spectrum was also calculated. The SMG amplitude, the spectrum morphology, the spectral parameters, and the cross-spectrum characteristics reflect the effort intensity and the developing fatigue. The results suggest that the MUs activation pattern can be retrieved by means of this noninvasive tool.<>
