Abstract:

The increasing demand of data rate for maritime related applications is attracting developments for maritime broadband radio communications. Path loss models are essential tools to evaluate radio coverage and system performance. In this communication, we present a semi-deterministic path loss model for harbor scenarios where the vessel travels along an in-land waterway. The proposed model combines the empirical International Telecommunication Union path loss model with geometrical calculation schemes that deterministically determine the reflected path on the waterway and the diffracted paths on nearby buildings. A prediction for the transition between line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS conditions is supported by the model. The proposed model is validated by a comparison to channel measurement data.
