Abstract:

This paper describes design considerations for a short-stroke high-dynamic linear actuator especially to be used as valve actuator in automotive applications, including the determination of actuator topology and geometry parameters as well as the force and dynamic calculations using finite element method. Special aspects concerning the practical realization are discussed. Furthermore, results of experimental measurements are presented.

I. INTRODUCTION

With the recent rapid progress in permanent-magnet technology, especially through the use of high-energy-density rare-earth materials, very compact and highperformance electromagnetic linear actuators are now available. They open new possibilities for high-force motion control in mechatronic applications where great flexibility, high control dynamics and precise positioning are required at the same time.
