Abstract:

Several options for modeling high volume conveyors are examined, and the advantages and disadvantages of each option are noted. Several key issues, such as computer memory, run time, and model accuracy, are evaluated for each modeling approach. A high-volume conveyor sorting system at a Federal Express facility is used to illustrate how one modeling option has been successfully implemented. The option selected required that unique conveyor constructs should be developed. These constructs provide all of the control of the physical system and make the model efficient from the standpoint of computer memory and execution speed.<>
