Abstract:

The time consuming process of building hardware, designing algorithms and implementing them to successfully complete an M.S. thesis or Ph.D. dissertation is seeing the reduction of number of quality students entering the power electronics programs all over the world. The lack of simple setups to teach senior level undergraduate students and entry level graduate students about drives in a lab environment also contributes to the falling number of students in this field. The installation of the Digivac - DSP based trainer kit will successfully bring down the time required obtaining a M.S, or Ph.D. degree as it allows students to concentrate on developing control strategies and algorithms instead of spending a lot of time in building standard hardware which does not fall into their scope of the project. DSP based control strategies for AC drives can be tested in an extremely short time which will help academics to disseminate the information in short periods through quality papers in conferences. The development of the Digivac trainer kit represents a significant step in advancing power electronics education.
