Technical feasibility analysis of the proposed 2×350 MW HVDC substation between Georgia and Turkey

A high voltage back-to-back (HVDC B2B) interconnection, which will both enable asynchronous electricity trading possibilities between Georgia and Turkey, and increase the total electricity trading capacity between the two markets, is being planned to be realized in the near future. Accordingly, detailed technical feasibility analyses are being performed by the transmission system experts of both parties. In this paper, technical feasibility studies related to the proposed HVDC B2B substation in Akhaltsikhe region of Georgia are explained concentrating on both the power quality and the transmission system security concerns of this interconnection on the Turkish electricity transmission system.
