Going the Distance

The needs for transmission of bulk power over long distances are growing. It allows the interconnection between the remote power plants and power grids. Bulk power transmission over long distances may also be used to bring electrical and energetic benefits for both interconnected power systems. Regarding the solutions to transmitting bulk power over long distances, the high- voltage dc (HVDC) and half-wave length transmission systems have been shown as adequate solutions, depending on the length of the transmission trunk. However, both HVDC and half-wavelength transmission systems have some limitations in deriving fractional amount of power along the main power corridor, as they are intrinsically point-to-point transmission systems.
