Josephson devices combine high speed and low power dissipation which are desirable assets necessary but not sufficient to guarantee the realization of high performance computers. Adequate gain, margins and other engineering considerations also must be achieved in circuit and system designs. The evolution of random logic circuits is an example used to illustrate how this has been done, and two new ... View full abstract»

This paper describes and illustrates the standard cell approach for generating low-cost, quick-turnaround, custom, random logic LSI and VLSI devices using the CMOS/SOS technology. Special features of the automatic layout program that provide increased performance, speed, and density will be highlighted and illustrated in various LSI devices into which these features have been designed. The Automated Universal Array system is a new, minimum-cost approach to generating custom LSI devices. It incorporates a specially developed fixed geometry design with an automatic layout program. With this system, custom LSI devices can be produced by generation of a single unique metal level, with the interconnections determined and optimized automatically. This paper describes the topological d... View full abstract»

I am very pleased that the Newsletter and Magazine Editors of Division I have invited the Director candidates to communicate with the members of Division I. A little research and some guessing suggests that among the 34,000 memberships in our four societies (ASSP, CAS, CS, IT) there are 33% outside the U.S. and 25,000 people in all since some of us hold membership in more than one Division I Socie...
