    The flowthrough-type barrel switch plays an important role in highspeed 32-bit microprocessor operations. Arithmetic operations with multiplication or division and logical operations with data field manipulation can be expedited using a barrel switch. This paper describes a full-fledged CMOS 32-bit barrel switch and its physical design. With an extensive use of domino-CMOS circuits with undecoded control signals, a highspeed, area-efficient barrel switch was designed to shift or rotate 32-bit data to the left or right by any number of bit positions between 0 and 31.     Despite the fact that electronics technology continues to make substantial advances in speed, complexity, and reduced cost, there is, at present, a growing interest in developing photonic switching and signal processing devices for future communications applications. This paper begins by explaining some of the reasons for this interest. We then outline the fundamental and technological limits we can foresee for photonic switching technology and show in which areas we can expect photonics to be superior to other technologies. After a presentation of some examples of current research on electro-optic and all-optical switching elements, a discussion of future prospects for photonic switching concludes the paper.     This paper shows how a conceptually simple definition of a PNPN structure's blocking state is also a precise statement of when latchup occurs, a statement that leads to a concise (there are no fitting parameters), experimentally verified equation for sivitching current. This paper also categorizes the operational PNPN configurations for various triggering modes and shows how they reduce to two simply analyzed cases.
