The designation of the International Space Station as a National Laboratory enhances the ability to use the facility for educational objectives. The MIT Space Systems Laboratory and Aurora Flight Sciences started the Zero Robotics program to enable high school students to participate directly in the science conducted aboard the ISS. The program, based on the successful history of the first Robotic... View full abstract»

The international space community has become comfortable over the years with a model of operations based on verbal delegation of operations control from a mission control center based on Earth. This model requires near-constant telemetry regarding the status of the vehicle, as well as tasks on-board. The future long-duration exploration missions being considered will require significant changes in... View full abstract»

Taking advantage of the regulatory framework of the European Single Sky being developed in Europe; Spain has begun a process of liberalization of Air Traffic Services (ATS) that can lead to strategic changes for the development of Air Transportation (AT). An array of elements of the legislative process has been put in place to make this effort possible. Although this Regulatory Framework opens the... View full abstract»

We describe an extensive data collection and analysis of change detection using VHF- and UHF-band SAR data. Two airborne systems (CARABAS-II: 22-82 MHz, LORA: 225-470 MHz) acquired data for multiple headings and incidence angles. Twenty one targets of five types were deployed in forest concealment. CARABAS-II gives the best performance for the target types investigated. Analysis of the data shows ... View full abstract»

The US military, civilian agencies, and commercial sectors of our economy are becoming increasingly dependent on space systems and their unique capabilities. The aspects of space systems which lend themselves to a concept of Global Virtual Presence also create requirements and technological challenges for protecting the space assets and assuring their operation in the presence of the natural and m...
