Responses to a six-page questionnaire sent to 2000 US IEEE members, excluding students and retirees, are analyzed. There were 656 responses. Job satisfaction, paperwork problems, meetings, and the effects of downsizing are discussed. Views on the profession's greatest successes and toughest problems are examined.<<ETX>> View full abstract»

It is argued that technology will not advance as freely as before unless more attention is paid to metrology. The importance of measurement standards and the precarious state of research are examined. The desire of companies to realize standards in their own laboratories with accuracies approaching those of the fundamental standards is discussed. Electrical, dimensional, and time metrology are con... View full abstract»

The characteristics of thin high-temperature superconductors (HTSs), and the requirements particular to devices made of these materials are described. The use of HTSs in filters and oscillators is examined. The need to fine tune the distributed-resonator elements used in these devices is discussed. The use of HTSs for digital IC interconnects and attendant cooling problems are considered. The bene... View full abstract»

The operation and components of the flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) are described. FACTS, designed to overcome the limitations of the present mechanically controlled AC power transmission systems, uses reliable, high-speed power electronic controllers. Its benefits are examined. These include greater control of power, so that it flows on the prescribed transmission routes; secure loading o... View full abstract»

The evolution of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration's (NASA's) Deep Space Network is recounted. The launching of the US Pioneer program, following the orbiting of Sputnik by the USSR in 1957, and the communication system established for it are examined. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory's (JPL's) advocacy of a permanent system of ground stations, and the antenna design and site and fre... View full abstract»
