• ### Mosaic Models for Textures

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):1 - 11
Cited by:  Papers (38)
| | PDF (3003 KB)

This paper deals with a class of image models based on random geometric processes. Theoretical and empirical results on properties of patterns generated using these models are summarized. These properties can be used as aids in fitting the models to images. View full abstract»

• ### Automatic Analysis of Moving Images

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):12 - 20
Cited by:  Papers (54)  |  Patents (7)
| | PDF (4975 KB)

Cine film and videotape are used to record a variety of natural processes in biology, medicine, meteorology, etc. This paper describes a system which detects and tracks moving objects from these records to obtain meaningful measures of their movements, such as linear and angular velocities. Features of the system are as follows. 1) In order to detect moving objects that are usually blurred, tempor... View full abstract»

• ### A Separable Median Filter for Image Noise Smoothing

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):20 - 29
Cited by:  Papers (114)  |  Patents (7)
| | PDF (4771 KB)

This paper investigates some properties of the separable filter resulting from successive applications of a one-dimensional median filter on the rows and columns of an image. Although the output of this separable filter is not identical to the corresponding nonseparable two-dimensional median filter with a square window, its performance in image noise smoothing is close. In particular, its effecti... View full abstract»

• ### Parallel Image Processing by Memory-Augmented Cellular Automata

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):29 - 41
Cited by:  Papers (30)
| | PDF (4352 KB)

This paper introduces a generalization of cellular automata in which each celi is a tape-bounded Turing machine rather than a finite-state machine. Fast algorithms are given for performing various basic image processing tasks by such automata. It is suggested that this model of parallel computation is a very suitable one for studying the advantages of parallelism in this domain. View full abstract»

• ### Noah-A Bottom-Up Word Hypothesizer for Large-Vocabulary Speech Understanding Systems

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):41 - 51
Cited by:  Papers (13)
| | PDF (3794 KB)

Current high-accuracy speech understanding systems achieve their performance at the cost of highly constrained grammars over relatively small vocabularies. Less-constrained systems will need to compensate for their loss of top-down constraint by improving bottom-up performance. To do this, they will need to eliminate from consideration at each place in the utterance most words in their vocabularie... View full abstract»

• ### Deduction Plans: A Basis for Intelligent Backtracking

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):52 - 65
Cited by:  Papers (7)
| | PDF (3652 KB)

A proof procedure is described that relies on the construction of certain directed graphs called deduction plans.'' Plans represent the structure of proofs in such a way that problem reduction may be used without imposing any ordering on the solution of subproblems, as required by other systems. The structure also allows access to all clauses deduced in the course of a proof, which may then be u... View full abstract»

• ### A Clustering Performance Measure Based on Fuzzy Set Decomposition

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):66 - 75
Cited by:  Papers (98)  |  Patents (2)
| | PDF (2379 KB)

Clustering is primarily used to uncover the true underlying structure of a given data set and, for this purpose, it is desirable to subject the same data to several different clustering algorithms. This paper attempts to put an order on the various partitions of a data set obtained from different clustering algorithms. The goodness of each partition is expressed by means of a performance measure b... View full abstract»

• ### On the Inequality of Cover and Hart in Nearest Neighbor Discrimination

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):75 - 78
Cited by:  Papers (48)
| | PDF (1587 KB)

When (X1, θ1),..., (Xn, θn) are independent identically distributed random vectors from IRd X {0, 1} distributed as (X, θ), and when θ is estimated by its nearest neighbor estimate θ(1), then Cover and Hart have shown that P{θ(1) ≠ θ}n → ∞... View full abstract»

• ### Blob Detection by Relaxation

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):79 - 92
Cited by:  Papers (41)
| | PDF (7743 KB)

A blob is a compact region lighter (or darker) than its background surrounded by a smoothly curved edge. Blobs can be detected using cooperating relaxation processes to enhance their interior and edge probabilities. A discussion of the processes working independently and together is given. The use of a pyramidal relaxation structure, the use of the closedness of contours as an additional informati... View full abstract»

• ### An Algorithm for Converting Rasters to Quadtrees

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):93 - 95
Cited by:  Papers (71)
| | PDF (635 KB)

An algorithm is presented for constructing a quadtree for a binary image given its row-by-row description. The algorithm processes the image one row at a time and merges identically colored sons as soon as possible, so that a minimal size quadtree exists after processing each pixel. This method is spacewise superior to one which reads in an entire array and then attempts to build the quadtree. View full abstract»

• ### An Interactive Image Processing System

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):95 - 101
Cited by:  Papers (7)  |  Patents (1)
| | PDF (2452 KB)

A multiuser multiprocessing image processing system has been developed. It is an interactive picture manipulation and enhancement facility which is capable of executing a variety of image processing operations while simultaneously controlling real-time input and output of pictures. It was designed to provide a reliable picture processing system which would be cost-effective in the commercial produ... View full abstract»

• ### The Max Roberts Operator is a Hueckel-Type Edge Detector

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):101 - 103
Cited by:  Papers (24)
| | PDF (521 KB)

Hueckel's edge detector finds the best-fitting ideal step edge to a given picture neighborhood by expanding the neighborhood and step edge in terms of a set of nine basis functions. A very simple case of this approach uses a 2 × 2 neighborhood and three basis functions. This case is solved explicitly using elementary methods. The magnitude of the best-fitting step edge for the neighborhood AB CD ... View full abstract»

• ### Finding Edges in Noisy Scenes

Publication Year: 1981, Page(s):103 - 111
Cited by:  Papers (30)
| | PDF (2583 KB)

Edge detection in the presence of noise is a well-known problem. This paper examines an applications-motivated approach for solving the problem using novel techniques and presents a method developed by the authors that performs well on a large class of targets. ROC curves are used to compare this method with other well-known edge detection operators, with favorable results. A theoretical argument ... View full abstract»
