This article analyzes the performance of a 2-way supertrunk, 8.2 miles long, carrying 13 TV channels and a full complement of FM stations by means of FM modulation from a headend site to the system hub. Theoretical and actual performance are compared. Predicted group delay due to diplex filters in the amplifiers is compared to the measured delay before and after a simple correction. Interest in the distribution of data via two-way CATV cable networks has been a topic at NCTA conventions for over ten years. However, only a very limited amount of hardware and associated application software has actually been implemented on CATV systems over this period of time. The technology has, nevertheless, undergone extens-ive development and practical utilization. This activity has taken ... View full abstract»

Broadband transmission and distribution facilities are finally coming into commercial use as the privacy and security aspects as well as the cost effectiveness of in-house local networks are beginning to be appreciated. The local networks encompass a wide variety of service offerings that include various types of data transmission systems, monitoring and control systems, and video systems. It is e... Aiming at the development of future multichannel CATV-transmission systems the utilization of phase-coherent picture carriers is discussed as a means of reducing intermodulation-and crossmodulation-distortion arising in the line repeater amplifiers. The paper presents experimental and theoretical data for comparison of transmission performance. As a basis the non-coherent operation is reviewed. In... View full abstract»

The design of a wideband feedforward amplifier in the frequency range 40-300 MHz is described. It is shown that the technology is now available to push the output level over 1 volt for a 12 channel NCTA crossmodulation ratio of ¿60 dB, or over 1/2 volt for a 35 channel NCTA crossmodulation ratio of ¿60 dB. The triple beat and second order distortion are typically ¿80 dB down at the output level... View full abstract»

Several papers and many articles have been written explaining what feedforward is, but little has been presented on just where such technology should be applied. It is not feasible in just any location, due to inherent operational limits and cost considerations. This paper presents the aspects which must be considered when applying feedforward to CATV systems. Analysis of operation in trunk, super... View full abstract»
