The collaboration between global electronics manufacturer, Panasonic, and lens maker, Leica, has resulted in an image stabilization system in the Lumix line of digital cameras. Called MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (MEGA OIS), the system detects camera movement before a picture is snapped. The image is stabilized using angular rate sensors, called gyrosensors, to detect how quickly the camera is... View full abstract»

This paper examines the scientific and practical reasons why the energy development programs of virtually all of the developed countries continue to pursue the development of fusion energy despite the many challenges that they have to face. If it can be successfully developed, fusion offers an attractive, sustainable, environmentally benign, and economic source of energy. View full abstract»

This paper describes some of the control problems faced by the engineers working at the Joint European Torus (JET), focusing mostly on the control of plasma shape, position, and current. It details the control methodology used on JET, which can serve as guide for the design of sophisticated multivariable, yet user friendly, controllers for the next generation of fusion experiments. This paper describes the ITER tokamak from the standpoint of operation, with emphasis on the plasma control system. It discusses the plasma operation scenario sequence that is carried out in feedforward control mode, and presents the overall feedback control system, which can be roughly separated into two weakly coupled control loops. Details about each control loop, the magnetic and kinetic contr... View full abstract»
