A brief tutorial on the picosecond photoconductive effect is given. The use of picosecond optoelectronics for the characterization of broadband antennas is described. In particular, the transient radiation properties of equiangular-spiral and exponentially tapered coplanar-strip antennas are discussed. The transient radiation behavior and the polarization and radiation patterns of these antennas a... View full abstract»

The scientific concepts central to electrical engineering are traced historically. The work of early pioneers in mathematics and physics is examined briefly. The evolution of the field concept is discussed. The work of Heaviside and ensuing developments in loading coils, wave filters, electron tubes, Laplace transforms, waveguides, and solid-state electronics are described.<> View full abstract»

A relatively new professional society, the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES), which provides a forum for issues relevant to numerical modeling in applied electromagnetics, is described. The primary focus of ACES is on computational techniques, electromagnetics modeling software, and applications. Included is a description of the ACES annual symposium, publications, code user gr... The basic incorrectness of the scalar product approach to deriving the differential expression for the divergence of a vector function in the Cartesian system is demonstrated. The origin of the approach is traced, and its ubiquity in the literature is documented.<> View full abstract»

Some simple, approximate formulas are provided for calculating the axial ratio of a circularly polarized (CP) wave, as generated by two radiating elements that have amplitude, phase, orthogonality, and polarization errors. The derivations of the formulas are not presented, but agreement between the exact and approximate results is demonstrated for a set of sample cases, assuming that the above err...
