The STOL maneuver technology demonstrator (S/MTD) simulation is a high-fidelity, pilot-in-the-loop motion base simulation. The simulation was used to evaluate takeoff, landing, and air-to-air tasks before the first flight of the S/MTD aircraft to improve aircraft flying qualities, conduct engineering research, and ensure safety of flight. 208 hours of pilot-in-the-loop evaluations were conducted. ... Theoretical concepts related to decision-making, group dynamics, and communication processes are reviewed. A psychological distancing model of electronic media is described. Issues related to the role of electronic media in networking decision-makers are highlighted. Several laboratory studies that show some of the effects video, audio, and computer teleconferencing can have upon group interaction... View full abstract»

The authors discuss the automatic generation of feature detectors, which is the major task in the design of classical pattern recognition systems. They present a software environment that, in place of human intuition, utilizes learning strategies and stochastic search procedures to guide the generation process. The environment allows the exploration of evolutionary learning processes and adaptive ... View full abstract»

A description is given of the lightweight cockpit installed in the human centrifuge at the Naval Air Development Center as an approach to creating an acceleration environment similar to tactical aircraft. Its purpose is to provide a testing environment for advanced acceleration protection systems. The centrifuge is capable of very high onset/high sustained accelerations. A pilot in the human centr... A system has been developed to enhance the quality of mutilated speech. A standard spectrogram analysis of the damaged speech is performed. The speech is then resynthesized as a sum of computer-generated sinusoids whose amplitudes and phases are derived partly from the given mutilated speech signal and partly from rules based on known properties of normal speech. The sinusoids selected are only ap... View full abstract»

This guide introduces the basics of neural networks and is intended to prepare the reader to search, read, use, and understand the literature. A brief history is followed by a section devoted to keywords, phrases, and definitions. The basic building blocks with illustrations are included. A matrix of major neural-network paradigms with intended use and suggested applications is presented. Recommen... View full abstract»
