Readers are invited to comment in this department on material previously published in IEEE Spectrum; on the policies and operations of the IEEE; and on technical, economic, or social matters of interest to the electrical and electronics engineering profession. Short, concise letters are preferred. The Editor reserves the right to limit debate on controversial issues. View full abstract»

Aimed today at consumer electronics applications, the author describes FireWire, a fast, cheap, self-configuring serial bus which may eventually consign parallel buses to the scrap heap of history. Flexibility and ease of use are among the bus's strongest points. A device may be plugged into any other conveniently located device-whether energised or not-just so long as no closed loops are formed. View full abstract»

Photonics-the technology of using particles of light as carriers of information-is catching on because of the advantages of optical fiber over copper cable for data transmission, and the use of optoelectronic techniques for sensing and instrumentation. Here, the author describes how powerful laser models in photonics system simulators are a vital step toward virtual optical benches for optimizing ... View full abstract»

A significant part of optical-fiber capacity can be tapped now that optical amplifiers can boost many high-speed channels simultaneously. The erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier opened the floodgates to wide-bandwidth, all-optical schemes for multiplexing many wavelengths. Until the advent of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier, no practical all-optical amplifier existed. Optical signals were instea... View full abstract»

Until recently, power systems in the United States could be counted on to operate reliably. For more than half a century, generating and transmission reserves were ample enough to absorb constant increases in the consumption of electricity. But in recent years, that growth has combined with two other trends-larger than ever bulk transfers of electricity over ever wider areas-to subject power syste... View full abstract»

A variety of new technologies are becoming available that will help utilities maintain power system reliability while handling the larger volume of transactions. For example, power electronic systems can provide unprecedented control over electricity flow on transmission networks, preventing or containing cascading disturbances. In addition, new sensor technology, faster communications between con... View full abstract»
