This is an accompanying paper for an invited presentation at the 4th International Conference on Behavioral, Economic, and Socio-Cultural Computing (BESC-2017): There are numerous situations where people (or, more broadly, agents) need to select a set of individuals based on preferences of these people (these agents). For example, democratic societies elect parliaments, judges in competitions choo... View full abstract»

Socio-technical systems bring together the social and physical worlds where people, things and services interact altogether. With the development of Artificial Intelligence, these systems are increasingly incorporating automated cognitive processes, which are delegated to autonomous services and things acting on behalf of humans. The ever enlarging scope of activity of these systems raises many ch... View full abstract»

Through its data-driven approach computer science change all other sciences. It also refers network science and more specific domain: social network analysis. Social networks can be studied from four main perspectives: data processed by computer science, models developed by physics, human perception analyzed by cognitive science and neuroscience as well as survey research provided by sociology. Al... View full abstract»

This paper investigates the advantages of deep learning methods, in particular convolutional neural networks, to predict the exchange rate for non-reserve currencies of developed economies. Our findings prove better performance of deep learning methods comparing to the other available techniques. View full abstract»

Herding behavior is thought to often occur during market frenzy, stock crashes, financial crises, as well as strong bull markets. The issue has been gaining increasing attention in recent years, in the hope that timely detection of herding behavior can be used to implement effective means to mitigate them, thus to make the market more rational. So far, herding behavior has been mainly studied usin... View full abstract»

  • Equilibrium bidding protocols for price stabilization in networks

We consider a multiagent network model consisting of nodes and edges as cities and their links to neighbors, respectively. Each network node has an agent and priced goods and the agent can buy or sell goods in the neighborhood. Though every node may not have an equal price, we can show the prices will reach an equilibrium by iterating buy and sell operations. First, we present a framework of proto... View full abstract»

One of major problems that the societies and economies of developed countries face are traffic congestion and travel speed limits caused by them. Therefore, there is need to work on more efficient traffic control models than these commonly used. The aim of this paper is to propose such a way of managing the road network in order to adapt the allocation and costs of particular sections of roads to ... View full abstract»

Life insurance application requires in-person meetings with underwriters, tedious paperwork, and an average waiting period of six weeks before an offer can be made. This outdated process has become a barrier for broader consumer adoption, resulting large coverage gap. In this work, we aim to closing this gap by leveraging data mining techniques to optimize the insurance questionnaire form. Our exp... View full abstract»

  • Causalities among momentum, transparency and media in China

    Publication Year: 2017, Page(s):1 - 7

We studied the relationships among momentum, transparency, and media by causality detections in Chinese stock markets. Our results suggest that momentum strongly and individually attracts media coverage in China, as this effect exists both in the Granger test and the transfer entropy test. Media coverage causes momentum only in Granger test, which is consistent with Hillert et al. (2014). In other... View full abstract»

The Chinese historical classics Zuo Zhuan is of great value to study the history between 722-468 BC. The persons in the literature and the places they have been to are typical topics in the studies of historical persons and events. However, the traditional full text retrieval is not sufficient for such studies, because either a person or a place usually has different names, and a name may refer to... View full abstract»

Tone of a news report is intimately related to the topic of the article, and therefore can reflect the attitude of journalists or media. It is often thought that tone of news report, especially the international news, is affected by ideology. To test whether this is the case, we use GDELT (Global Database of Events, Language, and Tone) to compare the tone of international news reports among nine c... View full abstract»
