Importance of linear optics in the second-order characterization of molecular monolayers

Langmuir-Blodgett films of varying thickness are investigated by second-harmonic generation. The common assumption of unity refractive index is shown to be incorrect even for a monolayer, which appears to be well described by bulk constants.
